For this assignment, I explored the trustworthiness of privacy when it comes to using ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a generative AI tool that can help users learn, create, brainstorm ideas, and solve problems. The AI Nutrition Facts label I reviewed identified several privacy features, including data deletion, human oversight, guardrails, and a 30-day data-retention period.

First, ChatGPT does not claim ownership of the data users input. According to OpenAI’s terms, users retain their ownership of their input and their outputs. However, educators should still be careful about entering private or sensitive student information into an AI system.
Second, there is a clear way to opt out of having conversations used for model training. Users can change their settings through the Menu and turn off the option to improve the model. ChatGPT also offers temporary chat, which provides an additional privacy option. This gives educators more control over how their information is handled.
Finally, regarding COPPA and FERPA, I would not automatically consider a standard personal ChatGPT account to be explicitly COPPA- or FERPA-compliant simply because it has privacy settings. OpenAI does provide education-specific products and resources with additional privacy protections, so educators should determine which version of the tool their school or district has approved.
Overall, my exploration showed me that ChatGPT has several useful privacy and data-control features, but using an AI tool safely in education requires more than simply having privacy settings available. As an educator it is helpful to use ChatGPT to help create or establish lessons, however as a teacher it is my responsibility to be careful what information I input into the system that won't expose or harm my students. Teachers should follow their school or district policies, avoid entering confidential student information, and use education-specific protections when available.
