Critical Issues in Technology

The 10 Issues in Educational Technology report from the Southern Regional Education Board emphasizes that educational technology is much more than using computers in the classroom. It highlights ten key issues that schools must address, including data privacy, digital literacy, technology security, accessibility, emerging technologies, predictive analytics, and personalized learning. The report explains that technology should improve teaching and learning while ensuring students have equitable access to digital resources and that their personal information remains secure.

The topic that stood out to me the most was Student Digital Literacy. The report explains that digital literacy goes beyond knowing how to use technology. Students must learn how to evaluate online information, recognize misinformation, communicate responsibly, and become ethical digital citizens. These skills should begin in the early grades and continue through college because they are essential for success in today's digital world.

Why This Matters to Me

As a future educator, I realize that my responsibility extends beyond teaching academic content. I must also prepare students to use technology responsibly, ethically, and effectively. Whether I teach elementary students or adult learners in GED programs, digital literacy will be a critical life skill.

I also found the discussion of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to be very relevant. AI is transforming education by helping teachers create lesson plans, personalize instruction, provide immediate feedback, and improve accessibility for diverse learners. However, the report reminds educators that new technologies should only be adopted after careful evaluation, adequate training, and consideration of student privacy and instructional effectiveness.

As a graduate student, I have already experienced these benefits firsthand. AI tools have helped me organize research, study for certification exams, develop lesson plans, and improve my academic writing. At the same time, this course has reminded me that educators must use these tools responsibly while maintaining academic integrity and protecting student data.

What I Need to Learn More About

I would like to learn more about artificial intelligence governance and ethical AI implementation in education. Although AI offers many opportunities to improve instruction, educators must understand how to protect student privacy and how to evaluate AI tools before using them in the classroom

As technology continues to evolve, teachers must become informed decision-makers rather than simply users of technology.

Technology has become an essential part of modern education, but successful implementation requires more than simply providing devices. Educators must understand digital literacy, privacy, accessibility, security, and the ethical use of emerging technologies. As I continue preparing for my career in education, I hope to become a teacher who uses technology intentionally to increase student engagement, personalize learning, and prepare learners for success in an increasingly digital society.
