Using ChatGPT to Increase Student Engagement in the Elementary Classroom
With artificial intelligence changing rapidly it is continuously changing education, and one AI tool I have explored that has strong potential to improve student motivation and engagement is ChatGPT. As a future elementary teacher, I see tremendous value in using ChatGPT to create personalized learning experiences that meet students where they are academically while also connecting learning to their interests. Rather than serving as a replacement for instruction, ChatGPT can function as a supportive learning partner that helps teachers differentiate instruction and increase student participation.
Although many educators see ChatGPT as a form of cheating and thinking that students will use it as a shortcut from actually doing their own work. I think this will enhance students thinking and with proper instruction can use it as a way to engage more in their work. ChatGPT is an AI-powered chat-bot that generates human-like responses to questions and prompts. While teachers can use it to create reading passages, discussion questions, writing prompts, and differentiated assignments. Students can also use it to ask questions, receive explanations, and practice skills in a conversational format. What makes this tool especially engaging is its ability to provide immediate feedback and personalized responses. Instead of waiting for assistance, students can interact with the tool in real time and receive support tailored to their learning needs. This is like being able to help 20+ students in real time without the actual stress of tending to every child in the classroom all at once.
Research on student engagement suggests that learners are more motivated when instruction is relevant, appropriately challenging, and provides opportunities for autonomy. Self-Determination Theory proposes that students are more engaged when their needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness are supported. ChatGPT can support these needs by allowing students to explore topics that interest them, receive individualized assistance, and work at their own pace. Additionally, Universal Design for Learning principles emphasize providing multiple means of engagement and representation. ChatGPT supports these principles by offering content in different formats and levels of complexity, making learning more accessible for diverse learners.
This tool is most effective when used intentionally and under teacher guidance. Elementary students, English language learners, struggling readers, and students who need additional practice can particularly benefit from personalized explanations and scaffolded support. ChatGPT can also help teachers create differentiated materials quickly, allowing them to better meet the needs of all students. However, its effectiveness depends on thoughtful implementation. Students should be taught how to evaluate information critically rather than accepting every response as correct.
Although ChatGPT is a great tool for classrooms, educators need to be aware that this tool is not always accurate. The tool can occasionally generate incorrect or misleading information, for this reason, teachers should review AI-generated content before sharing it with students. Teachers should be able to teach students to verify information using reliable sources, especially with younger students like elementary level.
Overall, ChatGPT has significant potential to increase student engagement by making learning more personalized, interactive, and accessible. When combined with strong instructional practices and teacher oversight, it can help create meaningful learning experiences that motivate students and support academic growth.
